Phone buyer guide for 2026: what to check before choosing

Update years, a telephoto lens and a lab battery score tell you more than a chip name. Here's the order I'd check them in.

Most phone shopping goes wrong in the first five minutes, when someone compares chip names. I'd start with four things the spec sheet states plainly, and ignore the chip until the end.

Software support first

This is the number that decides how long the phone is safe to use. The Pixel 11 has 7 years of updates and the Galaxy A37 5G has 6. Apple makes no promise for the iPhone 17, so the 5 years I use is an estimate from its track record (checked Nov 1, 2026). The Moto G (2026) has 2.

Two years is short. I'd skip a phone with two years unless it's a backup, because you'll be running an unpatched phone by the time the battery starts to fade.

Battery: trust a lab score, not milliamp-hours

Capacity misleads. The Pixel 11 packs 4,985 mAh and scored 15 h 40 min. The iPhone 17 has 3,692 mAh and scored 14 h 59 min. That's 1,293 mAh more for about 41 minutes.

The cheap Moto G (2026) scored 16 h 48 min, the best of the phones here. It's also sluggish, per GSMArena. So endurance alone won't pick a phone for you, but a low score will rule one out.

Camera: decide whether you zoom

Everything else is close enough at the top. Zoom is where phones split. The Pixel 11 has a 5 x telephoto, the Galaxy S26 has 3 x, and the iPhone 17 has none (GSMArena). If you shoot kids at sports or animals, buy a phone with a telephoto. If you photograph dinner, skip the premium for one.

Megapixels don't settle it. The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 200 MP main sensor, and GSMArena still says its camera hardware trails the best Android camera phones.

Water rating, then weight

Look for IP68. The iPhone 17, Pixel 11 and Galaxy A37 5G have it. The Moto G (2026) doesn't: None (water-repellent design only). Rain is fine. A dropped phone in a sink is where it matters.

Weight runs from 177 g for the iPhone 17 to 214 g for the S26 Ultra. After a year that 37 g is what you notice in your hand, so I'd hold one before buying.

Price tiers, and what each one gives up

  • Around $250: the Moto G (2026) is $249.99 with 4 GB GB of RAM.
  • Around $490 to $600: the Galaxy A37 5G at $489.99, or the Pixel 10a at $599.
  • Around $900: the Pixel 11 at $899 and the iPhone 17 at $929.
  • Above $1,000: the Pixel 11 Pro at $1,099 and the S26 Ultra at $1,399.99.

Street prices move. The Google Store showed a $200-off promo on the Pixel 11 through November 8, and Samsung runs sales on its phones, so check the current price before you buy.

Chip last

The A19 in the iPhone 17 is far faster than the Tensor G6 in the Pixel 11, per GSMArena, and the Pixel's GPU barely moved from last year. Does it matter for texting and maps? No. It matters for games and for how well a phone ages.

If you're stuck, the phone finder narrows by budget and size. I'd then read my Pixel 11 comparison with the iPhone 17, or my reviews of the Galaxy S26 Ultra, iPhone 18 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro.
