Apple iPhone 17e review: what the cheap iPhone leaves out

GSMArena's verdict on the iPhone 17e reads like a list of apologies. A 60 Hz display "that barely exceeds 1,000 nits", charging that stays "frustratingly slow", one rear camera, a big notch. Then it adds that the phone makes more sense in the US than anywhere else.

I haven't used the 17e. This is my read of GSMArena's March 18, 2026 review and Apple's own pages, all checked Nov 1, 2026.

What you pay

Apple's buy page showed $699 for 256 GB and $899 for 512 GB on November 1, 2026. GSMArena notes the base storage doubled to 256 GB from 128 GB. No charger comes in the box, according to the same review. The regular iPhone 17 is $929, and GSMArena says that extra money buys two cameras, a high-refresh display, UWB and faster wireless charging.

The good surprise is battery

The 17e has a 4,005 mAh battery, the same as last year's 16e. The new Apple A19 chip changed the result. GSMArena's Active Use Score was 15 h 30 min (GSMArena active-use score), and it even beat the standard iPhone 17. Apple rates video playback at up to 26 hours, which is the maker's number and not a lab result.

Charging is the weak part. Apple says 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or better. GSMArena charged from 1 to 100% in 1 hour 34 minutes on a 100W PPS charger, holding about 25W at the start. That's 16 minutes quicker than the 16e, and still slow. MagSafe is new on this tier, at up to 15W.

Chip, software and build

Speed is not the weak spot. GSMArena's Geekbench 6 scored the 17e at 3,680 single-core, the same as the iPhone 17, and 9,296 multi-core against the 17's 9,360. The 17e's A19 has a 4-core GPU where the 17 has five. In GSMArena's CPU stress test it throttled to only 93%, which the reviewers called a very strong showing.

It runs iOS 26.3, and GSMArena says nearly all Apple Intelligence features are available. The build is aluminum and glass with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and IP68 protection. Apple lists it at 169 g.

The screen and the camera

It's a 6.1 in OLED. Apple rates it at 800 nits typical and 1,200 nits for HDR. GSMArena measured a little over 800 nits on both a 75% and a 10% white patch, and said it felt dimmer than it should, even with the anti-reflective coating. GSMArena lists it at 60 Hz, with no Always On mode.

The back has one 48MP camera with an f/1.6 lens. Apple's page lists a 12MP 2x mode from the same sensor. GSMArena calls its daylight photos "pretty solid without really shining," recommends the 24MP setting over 12MP or 48MP, and notes there is no ultrawide. The Pixel 10a has one. The selfie camera is the older 12MP unit, and there's no Camera Control button.

17e or Pixel 10a

The Pixel 10a lists at $599 against $699 for the 17e. Its GSMArena active-use score is 15 h 13 min (GSMArena active-use score), a near tie, and Google's update promise is 7 years against the 5 years GSMArena gives the iPhone. The Pixel also has an ultrawide.

GSMArena's own advice is the iPhone 16, if a store still has one at close to the 17e's price, for its brighter display, better HDR and extra cameras. For anyone fully inside Apple's ecosystem who only shoots with the main camera, the 17e is fine. For everyone else it's a phone I'd wait to see on sale.
