Kindle Paperwhite (2026) review: 1 mm thinner, and little else

The 2026 Kindle Paperwhite is 1 mm thinner at a $199 list price, with the same screen as before. I'd only buy it if your current e-reader is older than 2021.

The answer here depends on what's in your bag right now, so I've split this review by that. I'm working from TechRadar's spec comparison and Tom's Guide's review of the Signature Edition. The 7.6 is my opinion from those.

First, the money. As of November 1, 2026, these are the list prices, all per Tom's Guide:

  • Kindle (2026 base): $149
  • Kindle Paperwhite (2026), 16GB: $199
  • Paperwhite Signature Edition, 32GB: $249

I couldn't confirm a street price for any of them. The one retailer link below goes to a Best Buy search page and carries no price, because I couldn't read one there.

If you own a Kindle from 2021 or newer

Stop here and keep it. TechRadar says the screen is unchanged (checked Nov 1, 2026). Thickness drops from 7.8 mm on the 2024 model to 6.8 mm, and weight goes from 211 g to 204 g. I can't imagine 7 g changing anyone's reading.

Tom's Guide does like the new power button, which moved to stop accidental presses. Tom's Guide says it's on the side and TechRadar says top right, which is a funny thing for two outlets to disagree about on a device with one button. I wouldn't spend $199 on it either way.

If yours is older, or you've never owned one

This is where I'd actually buy it. You get a sharp 7-inch, 300 ppi screen, a backlight you can shift from cool to warm, and IPX8 water resistance rated for 2 m and 60 minutes. Read in the bath all you like.

TechRadar points out that the base Kindle lacks that warm backlight. So $50 buys you a warmer screen for night reading and the water rating, plus a bigger display. Tom's Guide describes the base model as smaller. I'd pay the $50 without much thought. Saving it is reasonable only if you read in daylight and keep your books dry.

The 12-week battery claim

Amazon says 12 weeks. Tom's Guide couldn't verify it. Its Signature Edition dropped from 95% to 70% after two weeks at about an hour of reading a day with adaptive brightness, and it projected about 5.5 more weeks from there.

That's closer to 8 weeks than 12, by my arithmetic. It's still a device you charge a handful of times a year. Two caveats, though: that test ran on the Signature, and I haven't seen a matching result for the standard $199 model. Your habits will move it too.

If you're tempted by the Signature Edition

Don't be, at least not this year. Tom's Guide says the price went from $189 to $249. That's $60 more for the same tier of device.

For the extra $50 over the standard model you get 32GB in place of 16GB, no ads, an aluminum back and auto-brightness. Those are nice. But then look at what happened to charging. Qi is gone, replaced by a proprietary pogo-pin dock, and that stand costs $59 more. Wireless charging on this Kindle therefore takes the bill to $308 before tax.

This annoys me more than anything else in this review. A feature that used to work with a generic charger now needs Amazon's own part.

I'd buy the $199 model and spend the $50 on books.

If you read comics

Skip all of these. The Paperwhite is black and white only, and TechRadar sends graphic novel readers to the Colorsoft. I couldn't confirm a Colorsoft price this time, so check it before you decide.

If you dislike Amazon's ecosystem

Then the numbers don't matter. Everything here assumes you're happy to live inside the Kindle store, and no thinner chassis changes that.

A note on dates and details

Sources vary on exact ship dates, and I couldn't confirm them, so I won't print one. Graphite is the color listed for the standard model. Storage on that model is 16GB, which is a lot of novels, though it fills faster with audiobooks.
