How much RAM do you need in 2026: 8, 16 or 32 GB by use
Adobe's Windows guidance is 16 GB for HD video and 32 GB for 4K. For everything else I'd start at 16 GB and treat 8 GB as a price trap.

Memory is the one laptop spec you usually can't fix later. On many thin machines it's soldered to the board, so the number on the box is the number you keep until you sell. Check the spec sheet for your model. Choose it like you're choosing a lifespan.
What the minimums really say
Microsoft's floor for Windows 11 is 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, as Thurrott's hardware guide lists it (checked Nov 1, 2026). Thurrott also calls those minimums unrealistically low. I agree. Nobody should buy to a minimum.
The line that matters more is Microsoft's own for Copilot+ PCs: 16 GB of memory, with 256 GB of storage. If you want the AI features Windows is pushing, 8 GB is out before you start.
8 GB
It runs a browser, email, documents and video calls. That's the honest case for it, and it's a narrow one.
The trouble is price pressure. Dell's entry XPS 13 ships with 8 GB GB of RAM at $699.99 (November 1, 2026). HotHardware reviewed the 16 GB version, which lists at $999, and the base model with 8 GB was not the one it measured. So the cheap number on the ad is a different laptop from the one most reviews describe.
I'd buy 8 GB only for a second machine, a kid's laptop for homework, or something I plan to replace in two years. There's more on that trade in the Dell XPS 13 review.
16 GB
This is my default. Apple's MacBook Air 13 M5 starts at 16 GB GB, which tells you where Apple thinks the floor is on a $1,299 laptop. It's enough headroom for a browser, a document editor, a chat app and music running together, which is how most people work.
It also covers Adobe's recommendation for editing HD video in Premiere Pro, which is 16 GB. For students, who mix all of the above, 16 GB is the safe pick. See the best laptops for college students for models that clear it.
32 GB
Adobe's Premiere Pro requirements page recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher media. That's the clearest published line I used for when 32 GB pays off. The same page recommends 16 GB for Apple silicon Macs, so the 32 GB figure is a Windows one.
I'd guess that code builds, virtual machines, local AI models and big photo catalogs also want more memory, but I have no source for that, so it's an opinion. If none of those is you, 32 GB is probably money for a number.
Apple's memory is not Windows memory
Apple describes its memory as unified, shared between the processor and graphics. I have no test that converts Mac gigabytes into Windows gigabytes, so I won't claim 16 GB on a Mac equals some other number on a PC. If the machine you're eyeing has soldered memory, you can't add any later, so buy toward your heaviest week.
A simple rule
- Browsing and homework: 16 GB, or 8 GB if the price gap is large and you accept the ceiling.
- HD video, design, programming: 16 GB at the least.
- 4K video on Windows: 32 GB, per Adobe. VMs and local AI: probably 32 GB, my guess.
If you can't decide between two tiers, pick the higher one. The extra memory costs less than a replacement laptop.
